Step 2

Continuing the development of its online learning platform, Stiftelsen El Sistema Sweden has just released four new videos to launch El Sistema Play, Step 2.

In this new interactive series, El Sistema Sweden’s artistic director, Ron Davis Alvarez, starts off with two videos explaining how he works with technique and theory in mixed orchestras in a way that all of the students present can enjoy.

As the series proceeds, we also find out how El Sistema's methods can help us to effectively teach children of different ages/abilities at the same time and Ron closes Step 2 by showing us how, with the right preparation, we can get a class to build up a whole repertoire just a few bars at a time.

A quick review

For those readers who are hearing about El Sistema Play for the first time, a quick review:

  • In June 2017, El Sistema Sweden launched the El Sistema Play digital learning platform, with five introductory videos about how to organise and prepare classes.
  • El Sistema Play videos are short - 4-8 minutes - and playful and have been designed to inspire teachers and students to find new ways of further developing their skills.
  • In this second stage, four new instructional videos have been produced and a third stage will follow later in 2018.
Sharing and inspiring

Although Ron Davis Alvarez has been based in Sweden for the last two years, he still sees his work in a global light and El Sistema Play is a logical extension of this understanding, allowing him to make his experience available online for anyone who is interested.

El Sistema Sweden’s artistic director makes it clear that El Sistema Play is not about setting out a right way of doing things, but about providing examples of possible ways to train students and sharing that information in the tried and tested El Sistema way.

So, take a look and let yourselves be inspired by some new possibilities for developing your teaching methods, to both your and your students’ delight.
