HANGARMUSIK playing in 2017, © Andreas Knapp

Since 2016, HANGARMUSIK has been enabling children from refugee backgrounds to become part of their local community by engaging in classical music in an orchestral setting. Together in groups, they learn how to play an instrument from scratch and get the opportunity to play alongside local resident children and professional musicians.

At HANGARMUSIK:

children are introduced to their instruments from day 1 (as long as this makes sense for the individual concerned)

playing together promotes social skills and helps the children to feel part of a community

visiting professional orchestras and playing together regularly with guest musicians ensures the children gain a wide and varied experience of the world of music and of the world at large

HANGARMUSIK thus aims to create a child orchestra within which Beethoven, Mahler and Mozart are played and, at the same time, a sense of community and social competencies can be established. Cultivating such an institution signifies an important step within the integration of the children involved and it is this ethos which is at the heart of all of HANGARMUSIK's activities.
